Although we initially bought our reel mower to assist in reducing our carbon footprint, we have many more reasons to love what our parents consider a piece of antiquated technology. (My father actually asked me if I wanted to borrow his power mower.) I'll admit, there is somewhat of a learning curve at first, but once you've gotten used to attacking the lawn with only your own power and a rotary blade, you'll be addicted. Here's ten of our top reasons:
1. Stealth mowing.
I love being able to get out and mow my lawn without stirring up a chorus of mowers from the surrounding three blocks.
2. I can still hear after I've finished mowing.
Last summer, I was temporarily deaf after running the mower for an hour. Although the reel mower sometimes takes longer to complete the task, at least I don't walk around saying "Huh?" for the rest of the day.
3. I'm getting more exercise.
I've always loved mowing because it was a way for me to get a workout and get a job done. With the reel mower, I feel I'm getting even more exercise. I am responsible for all of the power needed to make the reel mower work.
4. I'm not sneezing as much.
Previously, every time I mowed, I would be in allergy hysterics. My nose would be stuffy from all the dust and pollen that the noisy behemoth stirred up. Now, unless it is truly a high pollen count day, I have no issues after mowing.
5. No more dangerous flying objects.
Need I say more?
6. My grass is greener.
Since the way a reel mower cuts is better for the grass, I think it is helping my grass grow better.
7. My hands and wrists are no longer tingling after mowing.
The constant vibration from the mower often left a strange numbness in my arms and fingertips.
8. I don't pay for gas.
The only fuel required for me to run my reel mower is a few glasses of water.
9. My wild violets are thriving.
No matter how low I make the blade, my reel mower doesn't destroy my wild violets. Although some people may think they are weeds, my wild violets make me happy.
10. I can mow when the grass is wet.
Since there's no mower deck, there's no mower deck for grass to cling to. I certainly wouldn't try mowing right after a downpour, but morning dew isn't a problem for me.
